April 2015 Staff Newsletter

The Conference is Coming!
If you haven't already done so, mark your calendar for the HCPS Teaching and Learning Conference on May 27 and 28 (new location: Bassett High School). In a few short weeks, you will receive the session schedule so that you can begin crafting your itinerary for each day. A host of teachers, staff members, and community partners are gearing up to help you prepare for 2015-2016!

From the Desk of Dr. Cotton
You already know this, but some of the nation's best teachers work right here in Henry County. The Teacher of the Year banquet is always one of my favorite events because we all stop for a few hours to honor the outstanding educators in our midst. The highlight of the evening is hearing each principal introduce his/her school's Teacher of the Year - they each share their faculty's pride in the winner and their excitement is infectious. I also enjoy sharing what colleagues, students, and community members say about each teacher (read those comments on my blog).

I am excited to support John Redd Smith Elementary's Amy Elliott as she represents HCPS in Regional Teacher of the Year competition. Congratulations, Amy!

Exabyte Challenge Winners

Congratulations to our most recent Exabyte Challenge winners! Heather Lankford, Amy Elliott, and Maribeth Martin are all now using Apple TVs in the classroom with their students. Wondering what is involved in completing the challenge? Visit the Tech This Out website to learn how to win new technology for your classroom.

Congratulations, Tech Leaders!
Longwood University’s Institute for Teaching through Technology and Innovative Practices, part of Southside Virginia Regional Technology Consortium, presented awards to three HCPS employees recently. Axton’s Michelle Ashworth received the Technology Teacher Award, Janet Copenhaver was honored as the SVRTC Technology Leader of the Year, and technician Irvin Betts was recognized with the Technology Support Award.
