January 2017

From the Desk of Dr. Cotton: It's All About Students

As I shared during the closing session of the Teaching and Learning Conference, we have a weighty responsibility to ensure that students are part of significant learning opportunities each day. Modeling our own enthusiasm for school and for learning often makes the difference in motivating a student who does not see school as a top priority. As we begin the second semester, think about how you can share your own enthusiasm for learning with the students around you...share what you're reading, tell them what you learned at the conference and how you'll use it in the classroom, let them know you're excited about a particular subject - show them that learning is exciting and something to be enjoyed!

Looking for Some Inspiration as We Move Into Second Semester?

Every educator has a message to share. What is the message you're sharing with students and the school community? HCPS's favorite pirate, Dave Burgess, has a great message to share on New Year's Resolutions for teachers. Check out his blog for encouragement on finding your drum for 2017.

Want to be on The Cutting Edge?

HCPS is looking for teachers interested in piloting a learning management system for the spring 2017 semester. Power School Learn, a new feature of Power School that is available to HCPS staff, is a learning management system that many of you learned more about during the Teaching and Learning Conference. Interested in the pilot? Contact Beth Adkins at eadkins@henry.k12.va.us.

Looking for Some PD to Strengthen Your Skills?

If you haven't begun exploring edWeb, take a few moments to look at this month's calendar of PD webinar offerings. These one-hour webinars offer a wide variety of training. Save your certificates! Once you have 5+, send them to mhatchet@henry.k12.va.us for PD points toward recertification.

Interested in Furthering Your Education?

Consider Elon’s Master of Education program. The Elon M.Ed. is a 26-month, blended model program that combines summer on-campus sessions with online courses during the school year (one in the fall, one in the spring) to work well with educators’ schedules. The program offers tracks in elementary education and gifted education. It’s also offered at a substantially reduced cost of approximately $10,000. Elon’s campus is about an hour from Martinsville and during the summer sessions, affordable on campus housing is available for any student in the program.
